In Canberra, National Party member John Williams reveals his thinking on how to more actively incentivise return to work. According to the senator the unemployed need only be given a "sharp poking with a cattle prod" to get them back to work. In justifying what some of those damn wooly liberals might consider a little too harsh a treatment Williams argues "the family farm cannot afford to pay wages when the person never shows up for work." Meanwhile, Queensland parliamentarian Rosa Lee Long has today put the case for reintroducing corporal punishment in schools. According to Rosa, while the current "go soft" approach has failed, a "short, sharp caning" would be much more effective. Apparently, it's a "great deterrent". More details on her proposals here.
